Activating Gift Cards

How are Prepaid Gift Cards activated?

All cards must be activated before you can use them. For security reasons, if your card is not activated within 3 months it is suspended. If you don’t activate within 3 months, simply email activate@giftcardstore.com.au and we will reactivate your card. All cards have a 3-year expiry.

To activate an E-Gift Card (email delivered), please click on the ACTIVATE YOUR CARD button in the email you received with your card. For security purposes, you must use the email address your card was sent to, to activate your card.


Your card has a card proxy number  required to activate your card, view your card balance and transaction history. You can find the proxy number by clicking on the link inside the email you received containing your card. You will be directed to our site which will display your proxy number.


You cannot onforward or email an E-Gift Card to another person or alternate email address.


To activate a Digital Gift Card, follow the instructions and use the link provided in your SMS message to:
1. Open the Universal Gift Card app and enter your mobile number and activation code.
2. Tap “Add to Wallet” to add to your preferred phone wallet.
It’s that simple! Your Digital Mastercard will be added to your Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay wallet, ready to Tap and Pay and/or use online.

Important information about Card Activation: We will never ask for your card number. You must not disclose your card number or other card information to any website or person except for the purpose of making a purchase.  You are liable for any loss or unauthorised transactions on your card where you have disclosed your card number other than for the purpose of making a purchase.


At the time of activation, you will be asked to provide personal information before you can activate your card. This information is required for identification and security purposes.
Once the card is activated, the funds will be available instantly.

How do I access Pay by Invoice?

To use Pay by Invoice, you’ll first need a Business Account.

If you don’t have one yet, you can request setup via our landing page: set up your Business Account (approval typically within 48 hours).

Once approved, the Pay by Invoice option will automatically appear at checkout when you’re logged in.

Pay by Invoice is a flexible payment option designed for business customers, especially for larger or recurring orders.

How do I pay by invoice?

Follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your Business Account
  2. Add gift cards to your cart and proceed to checkout
  3. Select Pay by Invoice as your payment method
  4. Complete your order

After checkout:

  • You’ll receive an order confirmation email with a link to your order and invoice
  • Open the link (you may need to log in again)
  • On the order page, click Download Invoice to access payment details

Your order will be processed once payment has been received.

What is the difference between an E-Gift Card and a Digital Gift Card?

  • E-Gift Cards are sent the same-day to your gift recipient by email, and can be used anywhere instore or online where Prepaid Mastercards are accepted. Recipients can easily add to their preferred digital wallet (Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay).
  • Digital Prepaid Mastercards are sent the same-day to your gift recipient’s phone by SMS and can be stored in their phone wallet. They can be spent at over 37 million online and instore locations worldwide.

Both E-Gift Cards and Digital Gift Cards are sent the same-day, or can be scheduled for a future date up to 6 months in advance so you’ll never miss a gifting occasion again!

How can I pay for my Gift Card Store purchase?

All orders can be paid for using Mastercard, Amex, or Visa, in Australian dollars only. You can also pay directly from your Digital Wallet with Apple Pay and Google Pay. A small Credit Card Processing Fee applies to cover the costs of credit card acceptance and fraud coverage.

Apple Pay offers a fast, secure, and convenient way to complete your purchase. To buy gift cards using Apple Pay, simply select your desired gift card on our website and proceed to checkout. At the payment step, choose Apple Pay as your payment option, and follow the prompts on your Apple device to confirm the transaction. Ensure that your Apple Pay is set up and linked to a valid payment method.

To use Google Pay, you must have a valid payment method saved in your Google Pay account and have Google Pay enabled. At checkout, simply tap the Google Pay button and follow the prompts. How can I pay by Invoice?

To pay by invoice, you’ll need a business account. There are two ways to get set up:

  1. During checkout for orders over $10,000:
    If you place an order above AUD $10,000, you’ll be prompted to register as a business. Once your account is set up by our support team (within 48 hours), you’ll be able to pay by invoice on your next order.
  2. Get set up for a Business Account:
    Simply fill out the Business Account Application Form to register as a business. Within 48 hours, our support team will set up your account, giving you access to pay by invoice at checkout. Create Business Account today!

Yes, you can Design Your Own Mastercard Gift Cards in minutes! Simply drag and drop your favourite photo or personalised design, place your order and we take care of the rest. You can also add a personal gift message to any of our gift cards for an extra special touch.

How do I check my balance?

You can check your balance anytime! Simply log into your Universal Gift Card account via the Universal Gift Card app (for Digital Cards) or visit ugca.au (for plastic and emailed cards). Your balance and transaction history will be displayed there.

Gift Card Store accepts orders from customers residing in the US, England, New Zealand and Australia, however your recipient must be within Australia.

There are no fees for using your gift card. The entire balance on the gift card is for your use. Happy shopping!

When will my purchase arrive?

E-Gift Cards and Digital Gift Cards are sent the same-day to your recipient, or you can schedule delivery for a future date, up to 6-months in advance.


For Plastic cards, please allow 3-business days for card creation and add additional time for delivery which depends on your recipient’s location. Australia Post delivery times apply where postage has been selected. Courier delivery can be selected for a flat fee. If, in the one purchase, you have ordered different types of cards, these may arrive in separate envelopes and perhaps on different days.


For all card types, you will receive confirmation of your order and a notification to let you know your gift is on its way to your recipient.

Can I schedule my gift card send for a future date?

Yes, you can schedule your gift card to be delivered via email or SMS on a future date, up to 6 months in advance. You’ll never miss a special occasion again!

Where can Prepaid Mastercard Gift Card and Visa Gift Cards be used?

Our Mastercard Gift Cards and Visa Gift Cards can be used in any store in Australia or overseas and online where Mastercard or Visa prepaid cards are accepted, provided the merchant can process it electronically. They can be used for full or part payment for goods and services. Any number of purchases can be made with the card until the balance reduces to zero. No change will be given. Cards cannot be used for telephone purchases.

Where can eftpos Gift Cards be used?

Eftpos Gift Cards can be used instore at over 950,000 retailers across Australia with an eftpos terminal. This card is exclusively designed for use at card terminals and cannot be used online.

Can I use my card overseas?

Mastercard and Visa Gift Card Store cards can be used overseas. Eftpos cards can only be used in Australia. Check your card's Terms and Conditions to confirm.

Are Prepaid Cards accepted at all stores?

Most retailers accept prepaid cards so you or your lucky recipient will have endless choice! However, there are a small number of merchants, even though they display the Visa, Mastercard and/or eftpos logos that do not accept any prepaid / gift cards. From time to time, for security purposes, cards may be blocked from use in certain stores or specific international markets. Note: Eftpos Gift Cards can only be used at instore retailers within Australia.

If a merchant asks “Credit or Cheque or Savings?” what is the correct response?

Ensure the card is activated and the back of the card is signed before use. If using a Mastercard Gift Card, select CREDIT and OK. If the terminal prompts you to enter a pin, select ENTER or OK to proceed without a PIN number and the merchant may ask you to sign the docket.


If using an eftpos Gift Card, swipe it, select SAVINGS, and enter the PIN shown on the back of your card.

Why might a proposed transaction using a Prepaid Card be declined?

There are several possibilities:

  • the amount of the purchase exceeds
  • the available balance.
  • the card has expired.
  • the card has been reported lost or stolen or has been suspended.
    a previous voided or interrupted transaction may have been authorised and the reserved funds have not yet been released.
  • the signature panel on the back of the card has not been signed.
  • the signature on the purchase receipt does not match the signature on the back of the card.
  • the merchant does not accept any Visa, Mastercard or eftpos prepaid cards.

No, our prepaid cards cannot be used at an ATM.

How can a cardholder check the balance or value left on the card?

For Plastic Cards, you can check your available balance and transaction history any time by visiting:

For E-Gift Cards, you can check your transaction history and balance and view Terms and Conditions at any time by clicking on the card details link in the email you received with your card.

For Digital Gift Cards, cardholders can log into their Universal Gift Card app on their phone.

Are there any fees for using the card or checking its balance or transactions?

There are no fees for using the card. The entire balance on the card is for the cardholder’s use.

Are Prepaid Gift Cards secure?

As with all payment cards, prepaid cards should be safeguarded and treated like cash. However, Prepaid Mastercard and Visa Gift Cards are more secure than cash.


Unlike many store cards, if your card is lost or stolen, you can report its loss so it can be disabled and replaced.

What if my Prepaid Gift Card is lost or stolen?

If you have lost your plastic card and think you may find it again, you may take the precaution of suspending/locking your card by visiting ugca.au Remember to unsuspend your gift card when you find it.


If you’re unable to find your plastic card, you can report it lost or stolen. You will need to know the card proxy number to do this. If the balance on the card exceeds $15 at the time you report its loss, you may order a replacement card which will be loaded with the balance of the lost, stolen or damaged card at the time its loss was reported, less an administration fee of $15.

What happens if I need to return an item to the merchant?

Each merchant has its own policy about accepting returned items. If a merchant does accept the return of goods purchased with any Prepaid Gift Card, then the merchant can process a negative transaction, so the spending power of the card is restored.

What if my online purchase exceeds the card’s value?
If your online retailer accepts split transactions, you can use your Mastercard gift card and other chosen payment method for your purchase. Unfortunately, most online merchants do not accept split payments.

How do I dispute a transaction?

To dispute a transaction for plastic and E-Gift Cards, you can launch an investigation by completing the following dispute form and emailing it to disputes@universalgiftcard.com.au.

Can I cancel a gift card?

Gift cards cannot be cancelled, used for cash advances, cannot be redeemed for cash and you cannot return the card for a refund.

If you have deleted your Digital Gift Card SMS message, you can contact our Support Team by completing our online enquiry for here. Please provide your name, mobile phone number and the name of the person or organisation that sent you the card.

To use your E-Gift Card instore, please ensure you follow the instructions and prompts in your phone wallet on how to add a card to your phone wallet.
